just like you tube

I managed to link to this site (and a stream of others) playing my fav net flicking game.. 6 side posts of separation..LOL. Click a link you havent been to on someone's blog your read and so on.

I found this and have spent far too long looking at book covers and comments on them.. kinda funny coincidence given our activities today.. but you know.. now i am co-owner in a publishing company and all..lol

http://covers.fwis.com/

this is also fun..

a twitter based social experiment.

http://twistori.com/

Cathy Z blogged a great concept of a 6 word memoir (Em check this out I know you are reading a few at the moment).. what would your six words be?

I think mine would be Experienced, learned, love, gave and captured.

maybe it should be she stopped blogging and eventually slept.

see.. you come here and you could waste hours... but in a good way!

Pre Prep to Post Production...

We had a busy busy day today.

As I was making the bed this morning - Lochie came in and said Look Mummy Look at the light.. we have to take photos... So we did. He was super cute and adorable and funny (oh yes I am his Mummy but he IS).. and so I said click and he did a different funny face... 60 clicks later I had 56 images I will always treasure.

He is SO clever.. what a great idea that was!

I edited one image and then edited a second one the same (but recorded the steps as an action).. not ideal but it did mean I now had an action which suited (same location/light etc taken only seconds apart) and then batch edited them ... 60 photos about 2 mins TOTAL I made them all black and white so it wasn't a drama and they aren't great black and whites but they are fine!

Then I threw them all in iPhoto... exported a slideshow as a quicktime and I now have a funny lil boy changing his funny faces every second .. hehe. I captured his new skill (winking) the muscles, and.. my personal fav... when he puts his fingers up near his head.. it just ISNT a funny face..but he THINKS it is and does it .. holds it.. and then rolls about laughing.

I am not going to post it here... but if you really do want to see it... email me :) If i decide your not from some odd porn ring for funny faces.. i will send you a link ;)

After that we went shopping and bought Lochie fluffy sheets... and some fruit and vege.. and home again.

In the car on the way to the shops.. Lochie asked who drew the pictures in this book? I was driving and couldn't see the illustrator's name and so I explained about illustrators and authors. We got discussing about publishing and how books are made.

Long time blog readers will be familiar with my belief in answering questions and using them to learn about things. I am also ALL about learning from real world things... if there is a chance to learn through play in an authentic way.. I am allll over that.

Lochie was super excited about the idea of being an author and I could be an illustrator. We could also be the publishers. So we decided to make his own book and we could publish it. I thought it would be a great way for him to gain a whole pile of skills and learn the value of books. Lochie was so excited.. MUM... I could be a author. I could have a real job all of my own!! (beyond joyous about this concept).

After his rest, we opened a Flyer template in Pages.. I deleted the headline, and made the text box bigger.. we kept the big pink flamingo.. it meant transferring the images easier later. I made 10 pages, and moved the text to the top on a few of them.. just to mix it up a lil.

After his nap.. we wrote our own story. We got out Lochie's puppets.. and he made up a story. I typed out the story exactly as he told it..we talked about the words and how everyone could read his story etc... just like his books.

Then we took the puppets down to our room, and sat them on the white bedlinen... Lochie took a couple of images (super easy.. on auto and he learned about focus and the red dots on the object etc)..

Then we talked about how the images were on the card.. and we put it in the card reader together. We opened them in Bridge and choose our favorite ones. He checked we covered all the characters and then we edited them. I explained that this is what Mummy does for clients..

We opened the files in photoshop and edited them. He used the mouse and ran the actions (under direction) and we learned about the eraser tool. (I made a layer underneath that was white, and we erased the edges so it looked a little better). Then we saved the files and compared the edited and SOOC versions. (I also let Lochie play with the Totally RAD actions and he was enthralled with the effects.

Then we had afternoon tea.. production is hard work!

Then I cleared the screen.. except for a Finder window with the images, and Pages with the various story pages. I showed him how to drag and drop and then undid it so he could do it. I read the page and then lochie inserted the character that was being mentioned. We talked about which character to use and why we wouldn't use some. He got it easily enough I just thought it was worth discussing.

I LOVE that you can drag the images straight from finder to the page.. AWESOME. Then we did a tiny bit of resizing them.. he loved that (he thought they were growing HAHA)..

then we bought the printer out from my office and printed the pages. He was so thrilled watching them come out of the printer.. shouting each time a new page finished. We made a cover page together and he choose a business name for our publishing company (lots of love book productions!) LOL

and then .. we phoned Daddy and he bought home a stapler (I only have a funky stapless one from Kikki K LOL) and we bound our book and shared it with Daddy.

Daddy's special job was being the storyteller... SO FUN to watch lochie hear his OWN story read back to him.

He learned HEAPS about books, publishing, writing, editing, graphic art, computers, mouse skills, photography, photo editing and manipulation.. and had HEAPS of fun! Will he remember it all ? NO.. he is four.. but.. it was important for him to do it and experience something real and to do something with reason.

I can see me going through a lot of ink in the future!

He phoned Grandma and told her all about his story and his process and then told her he was going to work in his own library.. hehe.

For those of you who aren't going to be able to see our beautiful book... we made it into a .pdf! We can now publish to the world.

For some reason (and Jude if your reading this.. feel VERY privileged).. he desperately wanted Aunty Jude to have a copy of his book to read with Uncle Noel.. He hasn't seem either for (umm 12 months or more?) but was adamant. So.... we emailed one.. He even dictated his own email message..and flounced off saying.. OH BOY I am a movie, I made a book and now.. I can do email.

It was a big day at our house!

You can download his book Download lochies_first_book.pdf

Please note: I have had a couple of people email to suggest I edit the book again (it doesn't make sense and that the photos are not very well edited etc). This is lochie's book. He made the book. I feel pretty strongly about parents MAKING an item (being a bit rough with it) and calling it the child's work... oh yeah well they did it ALL.... This is Lochie's book which HE made.. YES.. the editing is a lil rough (both text and pictures). He is four and learning to use a mouse. I typed HIS story not my own. LOL I think he did great (again biased mum in overdrive).. but really.. it is his work.

ENJOY!

Ps.I have blogged these puppets before .. they were from etsy!

NEW BLOG

Along with the new logo, stationary and information sheets... I have been working on a new blog for painted with light. I am really pleased with how the new look is coming along.. and despite beginning work on the blog in Jan! (yes i am slow).. it is only JUST coming together now.

I like typepad for my own blog (although this one may be moving soon!) and... I do love blogs like Becker's B-School.. and the Image is found's blog.. these are not the kind of blog I was looking for.

I wanted something different to the typical .. scroll down the page and read kind of blogs. I have this blog for life blogging.. long run on sentances and too much text..LOL I didn't want that kind of blog for PWL. I also find the same old same old.. with new colours or a new kind of gallery etc.. .well.. a little .. repetitive and overdone.

I was lucky enough to have Kylie make me a customised blog. She was FABULOUS! I sent her drawings in Photoshop.. and scrambled emails and poorly thought out posts via IM and she made me exactly what I asked for...and then.... when I changed my mind.. she changed it. (repeat several times!) ... patience is certainly one of her virtues. She created exactly what I wanted, and I could not recommend her highly enough... she is a lil busy but def worth the wait.

I now have EXACTLY what I wanted! It is more than a blog - it is a photo journal. It is nice and clean/minimalist... and includes a which has a photo.. (complete with two rounded and two straight corners ;) and text.. in my font! AND.. has one post per page... just like a proper book!

I wanted it to match the website, but be a little more personal and casual. I am learning my way around wordpress and can now post really quickly. I will be able to share a favorite image from sessions and life in a matter of minutes.

We are still playing with the navigation and tweaking a few things... but you can have a sneak peek here... and you can navigate - this way... or that way :)
I have posted some pages to kick off with and look forward to sharing some new sessions in the coming weeks!!

(let me know what you think!!)

Boy Germs

I am still sick.. but WAY better than the other day. I have a cough that sounds like I enjoy a pack or two a day and wash it down with a bottle of rum... my throats a lil sore.. and my head a lil stuffy but overall.. moving through it.

I discovered something.. or rather.. thought of something the other day. When I was a kid I shared a room with my kid sister (hi D - Lucette's bday is in the mail in the morning!) and it wasnt so great..LOL We finally got our own rooms and life was good...

I just realised. I now share a room again.. this time.. WITH A BOY! I sleep in a boys room.. EWWW. OK of course he is a perfectly lovely man... great husband.. nice guy.. very sweet and helpful and dont get me wrong. I like aspects of this arrangement... ;) but... I SHARE A ROOM WITH A BOY! and that... means he has a computer beside his bed.. tooooo many cables, plugs, books, business cards... and... lets not even mention that the dust bunnies have set up a community hall and celebrated the state of his side of the bed. I was appaulled to realise that his clothes fall on the floor and creep under the bed! That actually.. his corner of the room (between the bedside table and the french doors) was JUST about chock full of BOYNESS.

EWW!

Well we wont be having any of that.. THANKS... It seems a lil impractical to draw a line down the room with chalk or tape.. and less likely that I could learn to live with it... so.. we cleaned up today. The 25m (yes folks 25m) phone cable is gone (aren't some swimming pools 25m long?) and he was dispatched to the store to buy a 5m one! We decluttered, debooked, debugged and dusted. We vacummed.... i just visualised how the Fab Five from Queer Eye would have dealt with the issue and forged ahead..

ahhhhh clean.. blissful dust and computer stuff free! ahhhhhhh and yes.. now it looks like a girls room.. ewww!

LOL

I do have a pic to share. .hopefully V wont mind... yesterday we went to a first birthday party for this lil guy..

Isn't he ADORABLE.. ohhh I melt! and I still cant believe he is ONE!

We are convinced he knew the party was all about him! He was cracking us all up when opening his presents and he kept standing .. wobble.. hold it .. hold..it... *big round of applause..* clap hands.. wobble..plop.. repeat.. and the crowd went wild everytime..LOL it was hilarious.. and he enjoyed every second of being the centre of attention.

Happy Birthday lil man.. Hip Hip Hooray!

PS-PSA

A curious title.. i grant you..

It translates into PhotoShop Public Service Announcement. My PS motto is.. just because you could.. doesnt mean you should..

After spending my earlier PS years making models look 'perfect' - (read stick thinner/spot free/blemish/dust and life free).... for print ads and in store materials... I am very very very cautious about the capacity of PS and its uses..

I follow the 7 day rule.. if it could be gone after 7 days.. take it out. (this covers pimples, blemishes, hair in odd places) etc etc

I do NOT remove wrinkles, reshape noses, remove double chins, recolour eyes etc.. Can I...sure.. i matter of seconds.. will I.. NO!

I admit to being KIND... with tired Mothers, gentle with women who are ageing a lil faster than their spirits and boys who needed a few drinks the night before their shoot ;) but kind .. is one thing...

I LOOOOOOOOVE the totally rad actions... LOVE them. Crazy fan of them! The one tool in their set that bothers me is the pro retouch tool. It rocks.. dont get me wrong but I see it.. and its like minded tools used BADLY all the time.. Go gently gently... or you will create your own version of a Barbie doll...

Why I am writing this post... NOTHING to do with the FAB actions from Doug and Chenin... no siree.. It is because I was looking at tickets online for concerts and came across this rather disturbing image of Michael Buble..

Michael_buble_image_re

I am sorry.. but WHO approved this... WHO thought this was a good idea? WHO... WHO in their right mind sat there and did THIS ... with what I can only assume was a professionally shot image? Come on kids.. tired retoucher or not.. this is just BAD

Do not try this at home folks... really.. and.. for goodness sakes.. use the opacity slider!!

I now completely understand why I was once sentenced to enhancing and enlarging each individual sesame seed on a Maccas burger... until it reached McPerfection.... after I collected and collated a model's blemishes on her forehead (I was trying to stay awake and it seemed like a good idea at the time)... my supervisor was terrified the wrong copy would go to print on billboards everywhere and I was sent to seed hell until my attitude improved. LOL but this is why.. I get it now... Someone let the wrong file out.. surely? This was not done on purpose???

OK.. I have moved on from my PS moment..

I have been SICK.. ruley ruley sick... Lochie got sick Tuesday afternoon and was a sick lil guy all night, all day wednesday and bounced back on Thursday.. he went to play at Mum's just in time for both Andrew and I to be struck down on Thursday night. It hit HARD and fast.. we made up two beds in the lounge room and summoned enough strength to change channels/swap out the DVD... and dozed. Mum.. (ahhhh thank goodness for MUM!) decided we sounded like crap and kept Lochie.. we picked him up this morning (Saturday).. having spent 40hours laying very still and moaning about how miserable we were... and how much we missed our gorgeous boy!

Love you Mum. and thanks! we are SLOWLY feeling better... i see a quiet day planned tomorrow..

I can not believe he is already one!!!

I have searched everywhere for his present... 22 stores later - I finally found this present.. a lil wagon full of blocks.. a classic first birthday gift...

The birthday boy's bedroom has just had a jungle inspired mural painted on one wall (by his extremely talented Grandfather).. and his birthday is jungle themed.. so i thought it fitting to wrap the block tray in jungle paper - cut out some leaf shapes from green card and added lil soft jungle animals from Ikea (95c each!) .. So cute!

Good vs Bad

Lochie has an awesome imagination and ability to absorb what is going on around him

I just overheard this and had to share...

*conversation with himself.... whilst huddled over the castle with two figurines*

OK YOU GUYS... it is time to get the bad guy..

the bad guy... ?

How will you do that....

Well.. I am a superhero....I am the greatest superhero in the whole of this world

oh.. and who he is?

he is the greatest superhero in the whole of this worlds friend.

Oh and what does he do... he runs behind the greatest superhero in the whole of this world and gets there when the greatest superhero in the whole of this world has done the good things...

Well where is the bad guy,.

wait.. i runned out of hands...

*props bad guy up against the bookcase*

OK... be bad now .....here I come...
